Criteria for Removal from Service ASME B30.9

Chains

9-1.9.5 Removal Criteria

An alloy steel chain sling shall be removed from service if any of the following conditions are present:

a) Missing or illegible sling identification (see Section 9-1.7).
b) Cracks or breaks.
c) Excessive wear, nicks, or gouges. Minimum thickness on chain links shall not be below the values listed in Table 9-1.9.5-1.
d) Stretched chain links or fittings.
e) Bent, twisted, or deformed chain links or fittings.
f) Evidence of heat damage.
g) Excessive pitting or corrosion.
h) Lack of ability of chain or fittings to hinge (articulate) freely.
i) Weld splatter.
j) For hooks, removal criteria as stated in ASME B30.10.
k) For rigging hardware, removal criteria as stated in ASME B30.26.
l) Other conditions, including visible damage, that cause doubt as to continued use of the sling.

Wire Rope

9-2.9.5 Removal Criteria

A wire rope sling shall be removed from service if any of the following conditions are present:

a) Missing or illegible sling identification (see Section 9-2.7)
b) Broken wires
c) For strand-laid and single-part slings, 10 randomly distributed broken wires in one rope lay, or 5 broken wires in one strand in one rope lay (see Fig. 9-2.0-2)
d) For cable-laid slings, 20 broken wires per lay (see Fig. 9-2.9.5-1)
e) For less than eight-part braided slings, 20 broken wires per braid length (see Fig. 9-2.3.2-2)
f) For eight-part or more than eight-part braided slings, 40 broken wires per braid length (see Fig. 9-2.3.2-2)
g) Severe localized abrasion or scraping resulting in a reduction from nominal diameter of more than 5%
h) Kinking, crushing, birdcaging, or any other damage resulting in damage to the rope structure
i) Evidence of heat damage
j) Fittings that are cracked, deformed, or worn to the extent that the strength of the sling is substantially affected
k) Severe corrosion of the rope or fittings
l) For hooks, removable criteria as stated in ASME B30.10
m) For rigging hardware, removal criteria as stated in ASME B30.26
n) Other conditions, including visible damage, that cause doubt as to the continued use of the sling

Synthetic

9-5.9.5 Removal Criteria

A synthetic webbing sling shall be removed from service if any of the following conditions are present:

a) Missing or illegible sling identification (see Section 9-5.7)
b) Acid or caustic burns
c) Melting or charring of any part of the sling
d) Holes, tears, cuts, or snags
e) Broken or worn stitching in load-bearing splices
f) Excessive abrasive wear
g) Knots in any part of the sling
h) Discoloration and brittle or stiff areas on any part of the sling, which may mean chemical or ultraviolet/ sunlight damage
i) Fittings that are pitted, corroded, cracked, bent, twisted, gouged, or broken
j) For hooks, removal criteria as stated in ASME B30.10
k) For rigging hardware, removal criteria as stated in ASME B30.26
l) Other conditions, including visible damage, that cause doubt as to the continued use of the sling

Endless Round Slings

9-6.9.5 Removal Criteria

A Polyester Round Sling shall be removed from service if any of the following conditions are present:

a) Missing or illegible sling identification (see Section 9-6.7)
b) Acid or caustic burns
c) Evidence of heat damage
d) Holes, tears, cuts, abrasive wear, or snags that expose the core yarns
e) Broken or damaged core yarns
f) Weld splatter that exposes core yarns
g) Knots in the Round Sling, expect for core yarns inside the cover
h) Fittings that are pitted, corroded, cracked, bent, twisted, gouged, or broken
i) For hooks, removal criteria as stated in ASME B30.10
j) For rigging hardware, removal criteria as stated in ASME B30.26
k) Other conditions, including visible damage, that cause doubt as to the continued use of the sling
